To King High School Parents:
On August 14, 2006 the
Riverside Unified School Board passed revised Rules & Regulations #6114.5
regarding extreme weather conditions. Effective on that date we began using the
Heat Index Monitor developed by the American College of Sports Medicine as the
standard for student outdoor activities.
I have a Heat Index Monitor,
as does each high school Athletic Director, and I monitor the heat index
throughout the day. Current temperatures and humidity give the index reading.
The Heat Index Monitor is the current accepted standard of practice for
monitoring ambient conditions during outdoor physical activity. When the Heat
Index Monitor is in the 105 to 130 degree range, no athletic practices or
athletic events will be permitted. When the Heat Index Monitor is in the 90 to
104 range, practice is permitted, but no games will be played. If the index is
in the 80 to 89 range, caution will be taken to ensure proper hydration levels
of all athletes. Student physical activity in an indoor, air conditioned
facility or in a swimming pool, is not subject to these restrictions. At all
King athletic contests an athletic trainer is on duty. They treat athletic
injuries and take hot weather precautions.
Riverside Unified School
District, King administration and I share your concerns regarding the excessive
heat. As Athletic Director I will continuously monitor the Heat Index and when
conditions warrant I will restrict outdoor activities to ensure the well being
of student athletes.
Please call me if you have
any questions or concerns at 789-5690 x 62248.
Sincerely,
Tony Masi
