Dear parents,

Welcome to first year spanish at king high! I would like totake this opportunity to introduce myself to you and your student. I am Miss Adrianna Moya and I will be your student's teacher for the 2003-2004 school year.I am very exicted to be able to share the experience of the spanish language with your student. Please feel free to contact me if you may have any questions or concerns regarding anything throughout the school year. I look forward to sharing this great adventure I hope the students will have in their learning of spanish. The following is information you should be aware of in order for your student's sucess in this first year of spanish.

Year plan and objectives:

The year will begin with a simple understanding of vocabulary terms and follow through to sentences and phrases that are more complex. This includes various verb tenses and grammar that can benefit your student in both Spanish and English. Students will further expand their vocabulary and should be able to maintain a simple conversation in Spanish with their classmates and other Spanish speakers by the years end. This year will also expose the students to the diversity that is found in the Hispanic cultures. The text that will be used is Voces y Vistas. This course cannot guarantee sucess if your student is unwilling to study and participate.

Required Materials:

The student will be required to bring his/her textbook to class everyday as there are not enough textbooks to have a class set. Each student must come to class prepared with a section in their notebook deicated to Spanish,paper,a pencil or pen in blue or black ink only. Any other color ink will not be accepted and immediately returned to the student to redo. It is also beneficial to your student if he/she has a Spanish-English dictionary to use.

Classroom Rules:

Student cooperation is vital for their sucess and that of thier classmates. The following rules are necessary for such sucess.

1. As soon as the bell to start class rings, all the students are to be in their appropiate seats with materials out ready to learn, otherwise they will be considered tardy.

2.Sudents must be kind and considerate to those around you.

3.Students are to arrive prepared to learn ( i.e. must have all necessary materials for class).

4.Please follow the Rule of 30 ( do not do anything that if 30 people would do at the same time, would cause a class disruption).

Consequences: Any rules broken will be dealt with according to the severity.

1.Warning/ behavioral journal entry

2. Parent contact/ behavioral journal entry

3.parent contact/ detention

4.referral

Tardy Policy:

1st offense - warning

2nd offense - warning

3rd, 4th offense - detention and parent contact

5th,6th offense - parent contact and refferal as per school policy

7th offense - drop from class with a grade of "F" for the semester

Truancies:

Should a student be marked truant according to the attendance records, s/he will be assigned a 45-minute school wide detention each time.Parents, please be sure to clear your student's adsence within 48 hours, otherwise s/he will be officially considered " truant". Please keep in mind that you may inquire with the attendence office at the end of the day of your student has been marked absent for one or more periods.

Grading Policy:

A = 100% - 90%

B = 89% - 80%

C = 79% - 70%

D = 69% - 60%

F = 59% or below

Students grades will be a compilation of the following - participation (oral activiaties) 10%, Homework/classwork 20%, Tests (including final exam) 40%, Quizzes 15% Daily warm-ups 15%, Finalexams for semesters will be cumulative.

Late Work:

Late work will not be accepted for full credit unless the student has an excused absence or prior consent from me, the teacher. Any late work turned in after its due date will be given half creditof what was completed (i.e. if a student were to turn in an assignment late and normally be given an 8/10 possible points, s/he will be given a 4/10 possible points). Students are given one day per day absent to make up work. Once the student returns from an absence, s/he must turn in the work that was assigned the last day present. Major projects will not be accepted late but may be accepted early. It is the student's responsibility to inquire about what work must be made up after an absence. Homework assignments are located in the homework folder on the tableby the door according to the class and period. It is the responsibility of the student to get their assignments from this folder. Please arrive to class a little earlier should this be the case. They are to do this the first day back in class.

Extra Credit:

All students have the opportunity to redo assignents, tests, and quizzes should they be unsatisfied with the grade they recieved. Late assignments turned in are also granted the "redo" policy however they will still recieve the half credit. Any tests or quizzes that are retaken will consist of the same content but a different form of that test/quiz. I encourage all students to retry assignments if they do not understand it or do not do well the first time as this will help in their mastery of the material and be of great assistance for the material yet to come. For this reason, I do not offer extra credit assignments. The only opportunities given for any kind of extra credit are the following:

Participate over the required amount per month

not using your hall passes ( bathroom, drink,etc.)

Teacher Availability:

I am normally in my classroom everyday until approximately 3:30pm, sometimes later. Students can find out which days at lunch and after school I will be available for them each week by referring to the "Help/Tutoring" section located in the classroom. Students are encouraged to make appointments with me for any extra help should these times prove to be inconvenient. I am always willing to stay and help a student with reasonable notice given.
